The ringgit opened lower against the US dollar in early trading today as the demand for the domestic currency has yet to pick up due to the Awal Muharram public holiday yesterday, dealers said.
The local currency was quoted at 3.1860/1890 against the greenback from 3.1725/1755 on Monday.
A dealer said investors were hoping to see some positive leads after the holiday to make their major positions.
Meanwhile, the ringgit was also traded lower against a basket of currencies.
The local currency depreciated against the Singapore dollar to 2.5603/5629 from 2.5525/5557 on Monday and dwindled to 3.2339/2382 from 3.2162/2199 against the Japanese yen.
Versus the British pound, the local unit also declined to 5.1126/1187 from 5.0579/0640 and weakened to 4.2909/2956 from 4.2867/2914 against the euro at Monday's close.
